Frogs That Freeze

Do you wish you could hibernate like this?

What if you could freeze through the entire winter (so frozen you "clink"!) and you stayed that way until summertime? That's what the beloved wood frog of New York does! Their bodies produce a substance that is similar to antifreeze, allowing them to remain frozen until winter is finally over.

What's truly eerie about this phenomenon is that the frogs not only have no brain activity during this period, but their heartbeat stops as well. It's a pretty amazing adaptation that would come in handy for many of us! Scientists are even trying to develop the adaptation for human use since it would help a lot with organ transplants among other things.
